Kinds of Valid Online Businesses: Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is simply where you get people to purchase other people’s products and then you make money from the sale you just made.  How do you do this?  By using your selling and promotional expertise.  Normally, you would be paid a pre-determined sum of money that would be based on the sales of the products you sell.  However, in some cases, you will make money from the clicks, originating from your site that gets the potential customer to the affiliate websites.

That is not the only way you can make money with affiliate marketing.  You can also earn money by getting people to sign up for a variety of things on the affiliate sites, such as newsletters, etc.  Whatever affiliate program you sign up with will talk about this further on how they work.  You will be provided with an affiliate link to keep track of every sale, click, etc., you make.

So What Skills Would be Helpful?

You do not have to have any special experience to be an affiliate marketer.  Nonetheless, understanding how to do these things will be valuable.  Therefore, what you need to do is try to find out everything you can about how online marketing works.  In addition, it would be to your advantage to learn how to be a successful affiliate marketer from other top marketers.

If you want your affiliate marketing business to be a lucrative one, you need to understand that it will require hard work and a great deal of dedication.  So  even though this may sound harsh, I would tell you that if you do not have the time or the get-up-and-go to work hard, then do not even consider this as an online business for you.

Any Special Tools Needed?

There is very little in the way of tools that you need.  Beyond your standard computer with reliable internet access, you will want a website to sell the affiliate products from.  One good thing is that you would not have to stock up on the products, just to sell them.

One of the things you need to do is to provide fresh content for your website on a regular basis.  If you can write your own articles, that is great.  If you cannot, do not worry because you can always hire someone else to do them for you.  One other thing that would help you is your own blog to link back to your website.  It also would make the search engines happy with you.

So How Do You Start?

Well, after doing your research, you will have decided what niche you will focus on for your affiliate-marketing website.  Focusing on a niche will help you stick out from your competitors.  How so?  Well, if you use weight-loss as your niche, you would then create a website based on the niche you chose for your business.

Next, you would find affiliate products to sell from your website.  This is important – you need to be sure that the products you elect to sell for your business are related somehow to the niche you have selected for your affiliate marketing business.

Thus, if your niche is in the weight-loss field, you will want to offer affiliate products that are related in some way to weight-loss.  If you do not offer related products in your business, then you run the risk of appearing as unprofessional.  Furthermore, the search engines will not be too pleased with you as well.

It is true that there are many people who make quite a bit of money running this form of business.  It is essential to remember that the most work you will experience in this type of business will be marketing your website to get customers to find you.  Once they find you, your site ought to be able to get them interested in your products.  Hopefully, they will be interested to the point where they will buy using your links.

So do you think affiliate marketing is for you?

Kinds of Valid Online Businesses: Service Based Businesses

So what kinds of online businesses can you choose from to get started?  Well, you have various choices and I suggest you check out each option and see which one suits your needs before proceeding.  Today I will focus on service-based businesses and will continue with other types of businesses in future posts.

Service Based Businesses
A service-based business is simply one where you present some type of service to prospective clients. For example:

  • Writing
  • Web Design
  • Accounting/Bookkeeping
  • Virtual Assistant

More often than not, other small business owners experience a tough time completing all of their business tasks by themselves, so they outsource those projects to someone else.  When they outsource, they look for people who can provide the services they need done.

Therefore, if you have any experience in a particular area or areas, you could start your own business by offering your service at a price.  For example, many people need content for their sites but do not like to write or cannot write.  Therefore, if you have some writing experience and can write well, you can offer your writing skills as a service to those who need written content for their sites.

What Skills Do I Need?

That, of course, depends on the type of service you choose to provide your prospective clients.  At the least, you should have a certain amount of skill under your belt.  Generally, educational degrees are not necessary to perform these services, but clients like to know that you have some sort of experience to finish the tasks they need done.

Be aware that trust comes a little harder online.  Why?  Because working online does not afford the face-to-face contact that brick and mortar companies have when they hire employees.  Let us face it; people would like to know the person they are hiring has skills and knowledge in a particular field.

A way to prove that you have done it before is to have some testimonials to back up your claim.  That helps enormously,

What Tools Do I Need?

The type of service you plan on providing will dictate the tools you will need.  More often than not, the more common ones that most service based businesses should have are:

  • Computer
  • Reliable Internet access
  • Phone
  • E-mail program
  • Website

It is very likely that there will probably be some software programs to obtain as well.  Although each service uses some distinct ones, most need a word processing program, excel program, and some use a web-designing program.

You also need to consider an Instant Messaging program for those clients who like to be able to contact you instantly.  Some clients may not want to use the phone to call or wait for an e-mail response.

How Do I Begin?

Well, the obvious first thing is you need to decide on the type of service you plan to offer your clients.  Write down everything you can think of that demonstrates you have some experience or knowledge in that particular field.

Once you pick the service your business is going to be building on, it is time to get your website created.  Do not be afraid to highlight your skills or experience on your site.  Also, make sure to provide clients with testimonials from other people who have used your skills and were pleased with the results.  It is important to outline your rates and any other information about how you run your business.

Once your website is created and you are “open for business”, it is time to start promoting your site.  And I mean promote like crazy.  When clients contact you to hire you, go over with them on how things will go.  For example, explain to them how they will be invoiced for the work done and how much it will cost etc.

What you need to understand is do not expect to be making tons of money right away.  First, it will more than likely take some time to build a list of regular clients.  Be patient, keep promoting like crazy and one day you may find yourself turning away clients because you are too busy.

If you are already performing a service at another job, than running a service based business is a perfect option for you.  In most cases, you could make more money offering those services online than you can by working offline.

Having Trouble Getting Started? Part 2

In part one, I address the questions of do you need special skills or degrees and what it would cost you.  All these issues that I am addressing are important.  The better you understand them, the more comfortably you should be in starting your own business.  In fact, before you start your own business, you should have an understanding of not only these issues but you should have a better understanding of yourself.  For example, why do you want to start a business; how much risk are you willing to take; how much time are you willing to devote to your business.  Theses and many other questions should be answer.  Prepare and plan.

Can you start your own online business without having own a business before? No question about it.  Yes you can, just like hundreds of Internet Marketers who, without having any previous business experience, started their own businesses and made a success of it. But, once more, how much time and effort you put into your research will increase your chance of success.

Remember, the Internet is a fountain of information.  You can learn whatever you need to know in the various areas of the business you want to start.  You can find tips, tricks and all sorts of information from people who’ve been there and done it.  All you have to do is take it and use it to gain the power that knowledge will bring you.

How much money can you make from an online business? Well, I can tell you that although there are some folks who have become millionaires, there are a lot more that have not made any money at all.  In between, it runs the gamut from making a few bucks to making a six figure income.

So what you see is some Internet marketers make a six figure income, while others make the same amount a full time fast food worker generally makes.  If I were a fast food worker and I found out I could make the same money with my own online home business, what do you think I would do?

So what determines how much you make? There are a lot of factors involved.  For example, what business you start, how much time and effort you put into it and the return of investment on what you’re offering.  These, and many other factors, all play a part in what you will essentially make.  If anybody gives you a guarantee that you’re going to make a specific amount of money, do not believe it.  What does it matter if I gave you the perfect system to make money with, but you did not do anything with it?  You would fail.

If you only make a little money, I think you’re still ahead of those who commute to their jobs.  The money they spend on gas, clothes for work and meals etc; is money that goes into your pocket and not someone else’s

Do you really need a website? For the most part, a website will be needed to conduct your business from.  You will need to sell your products or show potential clients what services you have to offer.  It serves as your ‘office’ or ‘store’ would, only you won’t need to rent expensive space in a building to use for your online business.  What’s more important is that it’s a way to brand you.

If you don’t know how to design a website, don’t worry about it.  They are pretty easy to create if you use one of the many website design software programs or website building services.  If you desire, you can also hire a web designer to create a killer site for your business.  Just don’t let your lack of web designing skills hold you back.

Do you need special business licenses to run an online business? For that you will need to check with your local government agencies to find out what you will need in your area.  Because each area is different, it’s best to check and see what you need before starting your business.

What if I mess up the payment processing system? If you’re nervous about taking money from customers, don’t worry, you’re not going to mess up the payment processing system?

If you’re selling items, what you want to do is use an online payment system like PayPal or Clickbank.  These programs will take care of the whole payment process for you including refunds.  One nice thing to note if you are going to use a Shopping cart is that Shopping cart software a lot of times will come with a web building program, so take advantage of that option.

These are only a few of the many concerns I’m sure many of you have.  I hope this article has helped you resolve some of those concerns.  Just remember, research, plan and prepare.

Having Trouble Getting Started? Part 1

OK.  So you decided you need or want to make some extra money – just a little money or maybe just a lot of money. Now let me ask you a question.  Have you started yet?  Maybe you are like many other people who are afraid to get started.  So what do they do?  They put off starting their own online home business because of their fear.

What is it they are afraid of?  Well, for many, it‘s not knowing how to do it or where to even begin.  For others, it is the fear of failure.  There are many reasons why people are afraid.  So let me see if I can lay your fears to rest so you can get started.

Do You Need Special Skills or a Degree? That is a concern for many folks.  The fact is that the more knowledge you have in the area you want to specialize in is to your advantage.  Of course, the business you want to get into will determine the level of skills that you will need.  However, if you can do simple research, in most cases you can find what you need to know online.  There are many opportunities online and if you do your research,  I am sure you will find something that you can do.

As for degrees, while they are helpful, generally, you do not have to have any degrees to have your own online home business.  Just remember that knowledge is power, even more so online, so what you need to do is read as much as you can on the area your business is going to be in.  That is important

What Will It Cost Me? Well, it commonly does not cost much money to start your own online business.  If you are reading this online, on your own computer, then you already have your most expensive item already.  It is your computer.  Let us not forget internet access because that’s another cost.  Again, you already have that.

The other cost I can think of is your website.  Depending on the type of business you want to get into, you might have some other cost.  For example, if you want to sell craft items that you make, then there is the cost for the craft materials.

The bottom line is there will be a cost but you have two of the most important items already, your computer and internet access.  When I started online, because of my lack of money, if I needed something,  I tried to find it free online.  However, you have to be careful; some free items are not worth it.  Again, do your research.  Look for the best deals on items you need for your business.

Truth vs. Illusion and Online Businesses – Part 2

This is the second part of two in which I give you my interpretation of some of the more outlandish statements you will come across online.

Illusion- “Start your business absolutely free- No money involved!” Wow.  Everybody’s dream – starting your own business without any money.  Scammers really try hard to convince you that you can set up a business with absolutely no money in start -up fees.

Truth- The reality is that this type of scam will scream the ‘no money involved’ declaration, but then ask you to pay them a certain amount for information on how to get a business started free. Hmm…. Aren’t they contradicting themselves?

What you need to know is that there will be some costs to start up a business. For example, if you want to do your business right, you’ll need a website, hosting and an autoresponder, all of which cost. Any other costs very rarely ever break the bank.

Illusion- “Start Earning a Living from Typing at Home” I use to see statements like this in magazines back when folks used typewriters only; way before computers were around. Now, in the age of the internet, you see this statement, and others similar to it, splashed all over the internet claiming that you can start a business from home with your typing or in some cases, data entry skills.

Truth- The truth be told, yes, you can earn money typing or performing data entry from home, but not with these people. You would be better served offering these services to clients yourself and keep away from paying the scammers for the information on how to do it. With a little research on your part, for free, you can find out how to do it!

These are but a few of the many scam opportunities out there. I hope these will give you some ideas on how those frauds work and whom they like to prey upon. You need to know what your options are. In addition, do your research on any opportunity you do not feel comfortable with.
